Khader Adnan: Hungry for dignity

I feel obligated to write to you about a man called Khader Adnan. For those of you who haven’t heard of him yet, the definition of that name is: He is my hero! I’m writing this knowing for sure that it is completely and utterly useless as I can copy hundreds of links written about the struggle of this Palestinian hunger-striker for the past two months yet nothing has ever changed for him. He is still there in the dark Israeli jails or more accurately shackled to his bed dying in a hospital.
His story in short is that this man has been abducted and beaten up in front of his two young daughters and pregnant wife by Israeli soldiers at 3:00 am from his house in Jenin/West Bank. That was December 17 2011 in which he immediately declared his hunger strike up till this moment you’re reading this post. He’s been kept under administrative detention ever since under the pretext of having secret evidence against him that neither Khader nor his lawyer is aware of.
Administrative detention is a procedure under which detainees are held without charge or trial. On or just before the expiry date, the detention order is frequently renewed. This process can be continued indefinitely.
Please read this excellent article on Khader’s history, detention and health covered by the independent: Khader Adnan: The West Bank’s Bobby Sands

Outraged Palestinians all around started campaigns, blogs and different activities to raise awareness and to put pressure on international media outlets for a proper coverage of Khader’s story to eventually pressurize Israel into releasing him. And since you’re reading this angry post, none of this happened. In Gaza, every Monday morning the families of Palestinian prisoners go to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for a weekly one-hour (desperate) protest for the sake of their jailed kids. So, as Khader Adnan joined their sons and daughters in the struggle, they set up a tent in front of the ICRC to support him and his cause of putting an end to the administrative detention. That tent was never full unless the Hamas or Islamic Jihad leaders finally decide to visit so their sheep supporters would follow with their factional flags. The prisoners’ families and the regular people who always show up there needing no one’s invitation feel nothing but the hypocrisy of these leaders and their speeches full of empty promises all for the sake of media coverage and propaganda. It really hurts when you see the so-called ‘leadership’ benefiting from our own suffering.
For instance, the other day came Fathi Hamad, Hamas’s minister of interior, and preached about their resistance, strong will in fighting the occupation, etc..: Things we only hear about in their dramatic, fictional speeches. He had actually got the guts to:
1. Relate Khader’s steadfastness to the greatness of Islamists such as themselves and Islamic Jihad which made me wonder: What if that man was leftist for example?
2. Link Khader’s fight against Israel’s well known injustice to the Islamic Jihad who clearly and publicly stated that they would act against Israel when Khader Adnan is dead! The hardcore boys here are waiting for Adnan’s death so they’d act!
3. That Hamas will release Khader with an upcoming prisoners’ swap deal like the one they accomplished last year when they had Shalit. My question for him is: So, do you have any Shalits left under your bed? If not, how exactly do you plan to capture another soldier anytime soon? Or maybe we got this all wrong, maybe he meant that this would be the plan to free Khader Adnan’s dead body-you know the man has no time left as his heart might stop at any moment now!
As one last gesture to prove to you how Hamas is really concerned about Khader’s case is that when their own Abdel Aziz Dwaik, the speaker of the Palestinian Parliament, got arrested at a checkpoint in January 19 2012, Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip rushed to the ICRC with their supporters and media to make a big conference condemning the horrible act of Israel. But if you do a little calculation here, you would find that in Jan.17 Khader Adnan was entering the 32nd day of his hunger strike. At that time, the people who knew and supported Khader there had seen no one from Hamas showing any interest in Khader’s cause. Hence, the prisoners’ families boycotted Hamas’s conference for Dwaik.

For me personally, I regularly visit the simi-empty tent in Gaza and went on a 3-day hunger strike that activists declared on twitter starting Feb.8 in support of Khader. I will not speak of that experience as it will be seriously sick to talk about some dizziness, exhaustion and lack of concentration that prevented me from doing some dead-lined work while Khader is literary facing death at any moment due to his continuous hunger strike. But what was really interesting in that experience the very depressing reactions I got from friends and family. They all made sure that I knew what I did was insignificant, some made fun of me and others pointed out that I’m an attention seeker though all of them did not show one moment of solidarity with Khader. Yes, I was mad at them in the beginning, but eventually realized that these are the reactions of helpless people, we are all helpless of course, but these people I’m talking about here are the ones in denial. They know there are important causes we should stand for in our world, yet they choose to do nothing about it. This is the same as the 310 other administrative detainees in Israeli jails. They all want to end it, but only Khader Adnan chose to do something about it even if he stood alone. To me, in all cases Khader is a winner, simply because he never bowed and from him I learn that every single day.

Last Wednesday, we at the ICRC tent spontaneously decided to go to the end of the ICRC street and hold banners to drag people’s attention since they pass by the tent as if it doesn’t even exist while the local mainstream media doesn’t give much coverage to the issue.

Quoting Khader Adnan: ‘ I will not forgive anyone who could have done something to lift this injustice off of me, yet they did not.”

My friends and I were standing at a very vital crossroad here where cars never stop passing, so a good number of people had to see us. Well, the reactions varied from one car to another. Mostly were like this:
-Laughing and mocking us.
-Saying we’re crazy.
-Giving us disgusted looks “specially to me” because not only am I a girl, but also an inappropriate one ‘not covering my hair’!
-Being sarcastic and commenting: “Are we the ones jailing him? What do you want us to do?”
-Others who actually were looking at my legs and hair instead of the banner, blowing kisses and verbally harassing me.
-And finally, the minority who cared and gave us the victory sign, a smile, or verbal support. Others who stopped and cared to ask questions-mostly were great school kids (I LOVE schools kids).
When we went back to the tent before dark, we evaluated the spontaneous move and decided to do it regularly with bigger numbers at different vital crossroads. Only then I was told that the Hamsawi activists-hating man ‘Abu Saqer’ who regularly interrogated me and and other activists for months passed us by with his internal security vehicle and got out of his path to force me out of the street (I fortunately didn’t notice he was the one driving). He also did this hand gesture to one of my friends that clearly held a threat of bad consequences to this- Uh, #goodtimes!

Right on the next day, I asked mom to join me but preparing lunch was obviously a priority, then she said this provoking sentence thinking it will be an uplift: “You go habibti, you’re covering the place of the whole family.” I left with disappointment and said: “No mom, no one can cover the place of someone else, never.’
But my 4-year-old beautiful nephew ‘Mido’ wanted to join me and I tried to explain to him where we’re going and he agreed. A kid willingly offered to join me while grown ups don’t even know who Khader is. When we got downstairs (came down the stairs of 11 floors due to power cut) to find Mido’s mom who was also convinced to join eventually. My friends cheered for me as I managed to bring some of the family members along- a dream each and everyone of them aspire to achieve one day!
That day was for writing Khdaer Adnan’s name with our blood. I was as usual a coward who was dragged to the sidewalk by a friend in order to do that, I weeped and teared like little kids while the others laughed at me, but eventually the ‘damage’ was done to my thumb, I signed and later celebrated that mission impossible.

Afterwards, I headed with my very angry new banner towards the cars with Mido who briefly held Khader’s picture ‘I wish I had a photo of that’.

Banner reads: “Wake up..you have a cause, and it is not El Classico (Real Madrid-Barcelone game)

While holding that, I received the same reactions from the people but this time a French journalist ‘Anne’ was there and witnessed the discussion I had with a mini interior security guy who would be one of the future righteous heirs of Abu Saqer the Great and tweeted about it:

That boy came to us trying to explain the crime we’re committing in a friendly -VERY fake- way. He was smiling at us while saying: “You know we are in Gaza. Everything is different here, you can’t just look like this and stand in the street. If you were only wearing hejab, then it would be OK.”
I so wanted to punch him in the face but calmly replied: “So, if I put hejab on, it’ll be OK to be here? You think I’m inappropriate to stand for a cause? Oh, please stop lecturing me about Gaza, I am from here and I know for sure we’re doing nothing wrong. If you had a little bit of dignity, you would’ve been standing right next to us instead of pushing us to go home.”
He didn’t know what to say, mumbled few words and then I later asked him to leave as he perfectly conveyed his sick message.

Right after I headed with the family to a cafe so we can grab a bite and have access to electricity and internet since Gaza is drowning in the dark. While in the car, Mido started yelling: “But wait, where’s Ammo Khader? (kids use this word as in ‘uncle’ to show respect for the elderly) Why isn’t he with us? Is he still in jail?
-We replied: Yes sweetheart.
Mido: But no, we should go get him now. We’ll take the care to the jail and get him out!
His words made me want to cry so bad. I wish it was that simple. I wish the world had some of this purity, just and clarity but it doesn’t. We went to eat and as on every meal, I remember Khader who hasn’t eaten for more than two months. I remember his family and kids who haven’t had him on their dining table for more than two months. I remember them and eat the taste of the humiliation bitterness while he is enjoying the dignity hunger.
Next day, Friday morning, we stayed home because we had storms in Gaza so the ICRC closed its doors and the people of the tent stayed home as well. Later that day, Mido came to me and asked: “Ebaa, why didn’t we go to visit Amo Khader who’s in jail today?” -He meant the tent, and I replied feeling EXTREMELY proud that Mido did not forget about Khader: “Because of the weather, hun. But we’ll go as soon as it gets better. Will you join and carry his picture a little longer than the last time?” -He excitedly agreed.

Khader Adnan is simply the Palestinian Spring while our leaders compete how to shame us in every possible way. I was discussing with a friend two days ago what we really need to recharge and be able to continue doing what we do in the middle of all this madness and depression. We both agreed that that would be the survival of Khader Adnan. This man is out light at the end of the dark tunnel. I believe it will be nice to have a living Palestinian hero since they are all dead now. So, Mr. Khader hang in there and please DO NOT DIE because it is not only about you and the 310 other administrative detention, you give us hope-you are our recharge!

Jan 12, 2012

This weblog is an initiative of independant online activists to support the Welcome to Palestine Mission 2012 ; to spread awareness for the initiative and the reality of restricting policies by occupation which are affecting people who want to visit their friends and/or relatives in Palestine.

On this blog we will post news, updates, footage and articles related to the Welcome to Palestine Mission. It also will provide resources about the previous “Welcome to Palestine Mission 2011″ which was trended on twitter under the hashtag #Airflotilla.

Aside from this weblog you can follow our updates also on twitter. To get connected follow @airflotilla2 Our updates will be tagged with #Airflotilla2 in follow-up of the first #Airflotilla.

Our statement about the choice of hashtag #Airflotilla2 for our awareness campaign:

We will not succomb to propaganda or zionist rethoric which tried to bring a negative image on the previous hashtag #Airflotilla;

Every name which will be chosen definitly will be “hasbarized” again;

We are online activists using all possible networks and avaible technology to achieve our goal: creating awareness by all means possible;

In this light, we connect and keep connected to Airflotilla for it has achieved high ranking in search engines and 7,4 million results and linked resources. Success of online activism and awareness campaigns is all about “marketing”. It would be unwise to disconnect from an algorithm which has achieved this many in exchange for a name which gives no results or inside linked information at all.

In the coming weeks heading towards April 2012 when the activists of Welcome to Palestine will board, we will update this weblog with resources about the new campaign as well as an archive will be uploaded of all related news and available footage of the first Mission to Palestine for your reference.

Action

Success of “Welcome to Palestine” and the initial mission – exposing restrictions of movement and obstruction of the Human Right of free movement by Israeli policies – only will be successful if awareness is created for the violations of these rights. Therefor we ask you to share this weblog among your friends, relatives, networks and to follow @airflotilla2. Please invite others to the same. Share posts and retweet the updates so we together will make a strong voice against the violations of rights of Palestinians and all supporting those inalienable rights by challenging the restrictions of occupation or at least create awareness for the ongoing and increasing restrictions, until they are lifted and anyone will be welcome in Palestine again.

Even Palestinians themselves.

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions is primarily about freedom, justice and equality. The BDS movement, which is led by the BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest coalition in Palestinian civil society, is today challenging Israel’s multi-tiered system of oppression against the Palestinian people, which constitutes settler-colonialism, occupation and apartheid.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is among the most eloquent voices accusing Israel of practicing apartheid against the Palestinian people. Leading South African Christian voices have told their Palestinian counterparts that Israel’s apartheid is “in its practical manifestations even worse than South African apartheid.”

With its continued siege of the occupied Gaza Strip; its wild construction of colonial settlements and the wall in the occupied West Bank, especially in and around Jerusalem; its intensifying forcible displacement of whole Palestinian communities in Jerusalem, the Jordan Valley and the Naqab (Negev); its adoption of a battery of vile racist laws and its obdurate denial of the UN-stipulated right of return for Palestinian refugees, who constitute the majority of Palestinians, Israel has embarked on an entirely more belligerent and violent phase in its feverish attempt to extinguish the question of Palestine.

Israel and its lobby groups, which even Thomas Friedman accuses of “buying and paying for” allegiance in Congress, have been trying to delegitimize the Palestinian quest for equal rights under international law by portraying theBDS Call’s emphasis on equal rights and the right of return as aiming to “destroy Israel.” If equality and justice would destroy Israel, what does that say about Israel? Did equality and justice destroy South Africa? Did they destroy Alabama? Of course not. Justice and equality only destroy their negation, injustice and apartheid, and this is precisely what Israel and its lobbies are running scared of, the effective and sustainable challenge of Israeli apartheid and colonial rule.

As to the venomous and patently false anti-Semitism smear thrown recklessly and maliciously at BDS activists in an explicit attempt to bully them into silence, it is increasingly seen today as a weapon of intellectual terror that is employed to stifle debate and free speech when the subject is Israel’s occupation and apartheid or the generous U.S. support for both. This time around, though, with the BDS movement’s solid human rights and international law credentials and track record, the anti-Semitism smear is hardly working.

BDS is categorically opposed to all forms of racism, including Islamophobia, anti-black racism and anti-Semitism. Anchored in international law and universal principles of human rights, BDS calls for equal rights for all humans, without discrimination. This universalist commitment has enabled BDS to spread in recent years at a spectacular rate within the mainstream of western societies, achieving one success after another, in the economic, academic and cultural boycott spheres. Israel is conceding that it is losing the battle for hearts and minds not just in Europe but also on U.S. campuses. Thus the panic, the vilification and the bullying attempts to crush the BDS conference at Penn.

In light of the evolving popular revolutions across the Arab region and the Occupy movement that is largely inspired by them, it is crucial to effectively and consistently present BDS as being part of the global 99 percent movement for freedom, justice and equal rights. It is vital to reveal how Israel is right at the center of the 1 percent agenda, the Perpetual War Inc. that thrives on ongoing armed conflict, militarism and instability with all lucrative profits that are generated as a result, and not just for the arms industry.

The 1 percent are united, and so must we, the global 99 percent. Our aspirations overlap, our struggles converge. Unity is now a necessity, not a nicety. We must strengthen our alliance with African American and Latino communities, indigenous groups, labor, LGBT rights groups, human rights groups, faith organizations, progressive Jewish organizations and others.

There is hardly anything that Israel or its lobbies can do today to quell the healthy growth of BDS in the US and around the world. A movement that dwells in citizens’ consciences, that is rooted in an oppressed people’s heritage of struggle for justice, and that is inspired by the rich and diverse legacies of Mandela, Tutu and King cannot be defeated or co-opted. Our South Africa moment has arrived.

Omar Barghouti is a human rights activist, co-founder of the BDS movement and author of Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights (2011).

Calling the Israeli regime as one of apartheid is not rhetoric, nor is it an exaggeration or a propaganda tool. This is the reality in modern day Palestine, where the Israeli regime is based on discrimination, through laws, practices, education and most aspects of life. This apartheid regime not only imposed on the people in Palestine, but also on millions of Palestinian refugees denied their right to return home because they are of the wrong religion.

As awareness across the world continues to increase regarding the Israeli Apartheid regime in Palestine, each effort in this aspect would help accelerate the conclusion of this shameful page in history. And as this awareness rises, campaigns to boycott, divest and sanction this regime provide a very effective and natural response. The world witnesses a similar response transpire and bear fruit in the case of South Africa, and there are very good reasons to believe that it will do the same in the case of Palestine.

In 1947-48, the Palestinian people were subjected to an ethnic cleansing campaign at the hands of the Zionist forces. The number of Palestinians that experienced expulsion anduprooting during this period of time is estimated to be approximately 775,000. Over the past 64 years, while the Zionist policy of population transfer has continued at a slower and retracted pace, it still remains an extension of the pogroms that began in 1947. Currently, the Palestinians diaspora totals approximately five million. While many Palestinians live in cities across the world, including in North America, South America and Europe, there still remains millions of Palestinians living in abject poverty and horrible conditions in refugee camps across bordering countries of their native land. Many Palestinians that were uprooted in both 1948 and 1967 that remain within the borders of native Palestine, reside in abject refugee camps. Not only do the Palestinians suffer persecution, expulsion, settlements, land dispossession, collective punishment and massacres under an apartheid system, they are even denied the right to receive visitors into the Occupied Territories. Israel controls the land, the sea, the air, the water resources and even the money that flows in and out of her banking and monetary system. Israel can stop payments to the Palestinian Authority on a seconds notice.

For the past 64 years, the United Nations universal Declaration of Human Rights hasn’t been applied nor has it been respected by the Israeli occupation or international community, thanks to the US Vetos in the UN Security Council that has blocked the implementation of resolution against Israel. As a result, the Declaration’s articles, starting with the Right to Life, the Right to Self-determination, the Right to Education, and the Right to freedom of Movement, have been ignored. The majority of the other rights are violated on a daily basis, and the frequency of these violations are increasing by the day. Israel consistently seeks to prevent activists from accessing the Occupied Palestinian Territories, which allows and eases the increase of settlement activities which deprive the Palestinians from the most fundamental rights of a decent life. Today, there is an opportunity to change this reality through solidarity campaigns with the oppressed people of Palestine in order to reach out towards human consciousness. The “Welcome to Palestine” campaign is an efficient way to raise awareness of the conditions of Apartheid and dispossession inside Palestine.

We need to address our responsibility as free citizens, belonging to a free human community, with regards to a society in which all the values and rights we take for granted are violated day after day; we need to ask ourselves what our role is in this process. During the past six decades and within the framework of an international conspiracy, while there has been a lot of vocal international support and solidarity for Palestine, there has been no action whatsoever from the international community to stop the Israeli violations and to implement international law. The Palestinian local population is the victim of this great tragedy and is leading a battle to survive on its native land where it has existed for centuries. There is no exaggeration in comparing the Palestinian cause to the Native American Indian population, which has undergone a process of ethnic cleansing that resulted in its total annihilation. The policies carried out by Israel in Palestine have similar objectives.

Facing the complicit silence of several governments, particularly the US State Department and UN delegation which is complicit in the ethnic cleansing policy against the Palestinian people in Jerusalem and in the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territories; the civil society, free and revolutionary, has the right to resist Israel’s illegal and inhuman policies, and to demand their rights. I insist on the term “revolutionary” when discussing the role of the civil society because I firmly believe in its ability to participate in and lead a campaign for redress.

In response to the appeal of a great range of Palestinian civil society organizations to carry on the initiative of changing this bitter reality for Palestinians, the next “Welcome to Palestine” campaign, taking place on 15th April, 2012 has declared the following:

The Palestinian people must have the right to travel and move freely within Palestine, as well as outside the Palestinian borders, in accordance with the most elementary and internationally recognized human rights. Similarly, the Palestinian people should have the right to welcome visitors coming from the entire world without having to go through humiliating and intimidating investigations inside Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv. It is simply unfair and inhuman to isolate the West Bank and Jerusalem from its Arabic and international context because of Israel’s cruel policy and to block all paths allowing any human being to meet his Palestinian friends and colleagues.

It is completely unacceptable to travel through Palestine in an atmosphere of fear and confusion and to have to give the authorities fake stories and fantasies about girlfriends and boyfriends in Tel Aviv, or dreams of visiting the bastion of “light and democracy in the darkness of Arabia”, which adds further insult to injury in terms of the reality on the ground in Palestine. In other words, having to lie and pander each time one wishes to visit his Palestinian friends, and having to pretend to be a friend of an Apartheid regime is nothing short of disgraceful.

Secondly, the Palestinian peoples’ plight requires and deserves Arab and international solidarity because it is a humanitarian issue. This solidarity, which includes moral and humanitarian principled values, can help to contribute to change the life of Palestinians, which is nothing short of injustice, tyranny and daily suffering. The “Welcome to Palestine” campaign is an initiative which aims to shed light on the fundamental question that shall be raised regarding the oppressed people in the Palestinian territories, especially in the West Bank and Jerusalem: The freedom of movement without the Israeli occupation’s soldiers’ constant harassment and abuse. The campaign draws attention to West Bank Palestinians’ rights to welcome visitors from all over the territories and all over the world; just like an Israeli can welcome any Israeli or Jewish visitor that he wishes.

Finally, the acceleration of dispossession and ethnic cleansing, that has come to fruition with the election of Netanyahu’s Likud and far right coalition, within the holy city of Jerusalem and the Palestinian population’s evacuation from their homes and lands require massive citizen campaigns such as “Welcome to Palestine”. Settlement projects are constantly on the rise under the silence and indifference of the international political and economic community. This leads to the extinction of the Palestinians’ life under its many characteristics; historical, cultural and social. This is a very serious issue which requires alerting the conscience of international public opinion.

This campaign also seeks to place western governments face to face with their responsibilities regarding compliance with international law, and therefore with the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. It`s time for the hypocrisy and double standards to end.

The Palestinian cause is a universal cause, not limited to a specific religion, belief, or to a communitarian problem. It is a much wider and universal subject, an issue representing the Free Man abhorring injustice, racism and colonialism and standing up for justice and equality. Today, it is our duty to reject all oppression and injustice, not only in lip service, but in actions and deeds.

When the United Nations, in 1977, proclaimed 29 November of each year as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, it was a clear admission of guilt towards this people. It was recognition that the Palestinian people deserve international solidarity and support, in the name of justice and rights. This was merely one small event in a long story.

The story of Palestine and its people is one that will go down in history. In fact it has already started to do just that. One might say that the victor is the one that writes history. The victor in this case will inevitably be justice, and justice is at the core of the Palestinian struggle against apartheid, colonialism and oppression. And as in every episode in history, everyone will be mentioned according to their positions, and more importantly their deeds with respect to each story.

In the day of solidarity, let us remember that.

London (Pal telegraph) Palestine is the 195th state to join the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO. The admission of Palestine to the UNESCO family has given optimism and hope to Palestinians who believe in the mission of UNESCO “Building peace in the Mind of Men and Women”. The admission of Palestine is a symbolic victory not only for Palestinians, but also for the many nations around the world that voted for the recognition of accepting Palestine as the legitimate sovereign state of the Palestinian People. While this vote did not result in the legal recognition of Palestinian sovereignty in the league of the United Nations, the large majority of nations that supported Palestine’s admission to UNESCO is symbolic of the overwhelming global support of Palestinian national rights and sovereignty.

Palestinians have been subjected to a prolonged system of injustice, and for decades we have been struggling not simply to be recognized as a sovereign people, but simply to have our basic human rights protected. Today, with this unilateral step towards attaining our human rights, dignity and statehood, we are that much closer to ensuring the rights and dignity of the future generations of Palestinians.

In attempting to address issues of justice, conflict and peace between two parties, firstly the recognition and the acceptance of the other is paramount. Without acknowledging the rights and dignity of the other, how can justice ever prevail? It hasn’t for over 63 years, and it won’t until our recognition as a legitimate people; a legitimate people with full human rights and the right to statehood and self-governance is fully achieved in the United Nations General Assembly. Our recognition and acceptance into UNESCO is a positive step in this direction.

Diplomacy in the world today is dominated by political and economic inequalities and interests, or what many great geopolitical analysts have coined “Realpolitik. Yet still, despite the very powerful interests at work in the geopolitical fold today, many of which have staunchly opposed the Palestinian initiative and demands for legal recognition of statehood within the UN; this acceptance of Palestine into UNESCO proves that there is a broad consensus on the question of Palestinian statehood. That consensus is now clearer than ever.

Recognition is a vital process towards justice. Peace is to justice as a fig is to the tree that flowers it. No long-lasting peace has ever endured without a strong foundation of justice and equity for all parties involved. We wholeheartedly appreciate the UNESCO family for their generous recognition, support and stand on the question of Palestine. We, the people of Palestine, commend you for your integrity, fairness and righteousness in supporting the cause for justice.
